Hair Care 101

Finding the right shampoo and conditioner isn’t about influencer ads or buying whatever smells the best—it’s about understanding what your hair actually needs and choosing products that support it. The right pair can make your hair easier to manage, healthier over time, and cut down your styling routine. Think of it less like a beauty splurge and more like a foundational part of your routine.

Personally, I struggle to find the perfect shampoo and conditioner and the search continues. Hopefully, these tips will help you on your hair journey:

Your hair type Fine hair benefits from lightweight, volumizing formulas, while thick or coarse hair typically needs richer, more hydrating options. Curly and coily textures often thrive with moisture-focused, sulfate-free formulas that won’t strip natural oils.

Scalp health Healthy hair starts at the scalp. If you’re dealing with dryness, itchiness, or oiliness, look for ingredients that address those concerns—like tea tree for balance or salicylic acid for buildup.

Hydration needs Hair needs both hydration and strength. If your hair feels dry and brittle, lean into moisturizing formulas with ingredients like glycerin or shea butter. If it feels weak or prone to breakage, a protein-infused formula (like keratin) can help rebuild structure.

Color-treated/chemically processed hair If you color your hair or use treatments like keratin or relaxers, opt for gentle, color-safe formulas that won’t fade or strip your hair. Sulfate-free is often a safe bet here.

Ingredient awareness Pay attention to what’s inside. Sulfates can be too harsh for some, silicones can weigh hair down if not properly washed out, and certain alcohols can be drying. That said, not all “bad” ingredients are universally bad—it depends on your hair’s needs.

Climate and environment Humidity, hard water, and even pollution can affect how your hair behaves. Anti-frizz or smoothing formulas can help in humid climates, while clarifying products may be helpful if you’re dealing with mineral buildup.

Your styling habits If you heat style often, look for strengthening and heat-protective benefits. If you air dry, you might prioritize hydration and frizz control instead.

At the end of the day, the “best” shampoo and conditioner aren’t universal—they’re the ones that make everyday a good hair day.
