I fly a lot—some for business, some for pleasure. But no matter the reason, I like to be prepared. The confines of a plane seat are no place to be rummaging through an overstuffed carry-on, hunting for one elusive item. After more flights than I care to admit spent learning this the hard way, I’ve finally embraced the practice of keeping a small, well-edited pouch of essentials within easy reach. In the spirit of upcoming holiday travel, here’s what’s in mine:
AirPods These go in almost immediately after takeoff. I can’t stand the sound of cabin air. I stash the case until landing.
Charging cable: (plus a battery pack if the plane doesn’t have outlets) I try to charge in advance, but on longer flights, a backup is inevitable. I usually do my reading in the airport since I can’t read on planes.
Hand cream Airplane soap does no one any favors.
Lip balm Neither does that dry cabin air.
Snack I eat pretty clean, and I’ve yet to find airplane food that fits my goals. Bringing my own ensures I feel my best. I also choose something peanut-free—just in case someone on board has an allergy. I’m not going to be the reason for an unexpected landing.
Tea I don’t drink soda or alcohol, so I’m the person asking for hot water—and then waiting until the beverage service is over for it to arrive.
Glasses I text on occasion, and I need them for that.🤓
Fragrance This is less about me smelling good and more about someone else… not. I bring a rollerball so it’s subtle, and if someone nearby is sensitive, I just dab a tiny amount under my nose. It works.
Bonus tip: I always wear a big hooded sweatshirt when I fly—planes are freezing. If I’m not wearing a hoodie, I bring a beanie. Thank me later.
